The desktop's background can be:

centered

tiled

scaled

it can be selected through Start_menu -> Desktop -> Pictures
Anything you want to see in the start menu needs to either be in ~/.afterstep/backgrounds/ or /usr/share/afterstep/backgrounds/

!!! don't forget Start_menu -> Desktop -> Update startmenu before looking for your files in the start menu !!!
